Why go to the grocery store when instead you can go to the Nishiki Market in Kyoto? The market is about five blocks long and it has tons of small shops. Each shop has its specialty. There is one shop that sells only tofu. Another sells pickled root vegetables. A different one's mastered seafood. It's truly a super market.

Hi, Sophie, Do Japanese use plastic bags or do they bring their own resusable bags to the markets? Some towns, worried about the environment,are starting to ban those ubiquitous plastic bags. Are the Japanese ahead of the US on environmental issues, in your opinion?

Japanese people recycle or reuse a LOT more than people in the United States. They are definetly ahead of us on recycling. Sometimes people bring their own bags to the grocery store, but I haven't seen anyone bring their own bags to the market. People don't use a lot of plastic bags, but I don't think they are thinking about the environment, I think that they don't think plastic bags look nice. (everyhing you buy in stores are packaged nicely in Japan)
Do you think you can find such a market in Washington? Do you remember the Farmers' Market in Santa Fe ? It's a little bit like the one you describe here, but, of course with different stuff.....not seafood but chilis and free range chickens and yummy fresh breads and a Marachi band. Sometimes you find the same traditions all around the world.

they've gotten rid of all of the plastic bags at Whole Foods. and is the Nishiki Market all natural and organic? And I notice that most people bring their own bags to the Whole Foods near my house.
And please, lets not compare like that! I love Japan! But in the U.S. we have way more people than Japan, with alot more living space lol. So unfortunately alot of our citizens haven't thought about making choices conducive to the environment like they do in ultra dense cities like, ... Tokyo... because not everyone feels the need to appreciate the little land we have here. Where as in Japan... yeah. lol .
